Associations

  • Association of Professional Communication Consultants (APCC) – international network of professionals including consultants, trainers, facilitators, executive coaches, writers, editors, corporate communication specialists, educators, and technical communicators. Membership costs $50/year.
  • Bay Area Editors Forum – San Francisco Bay Area association of in-house and freelance editors; job listings and monthly events. Membership costs $40/year.
  • International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) – provides resources for communication professionals. Membership costs $209/year plus varying region/chapter costs.
  • LinkedIn – online network that helps you stay connected with current and former colleagues. Basic membership is FREE.
  • Media Alliance – training, job listings, and other resources for people in media-related occupations. Basic membership costs $55/year; to become a member, subscribe to the job file e-mail list or register for a class.
  • Media Bistro – jobs, classes, community, and news for media professionals. Basic membership is free; premium membership is $49/year.
  • National Writers Union (NWU) – trade union for freelance writers of all genres working in U.S. markets. Sliding-scale membership cost; benefits include job listings, insurance, networking events, and mentoring program.
  • San Francisco Women on the Web (SFWoW) – resource for San Francisco area women (and some exceptional men) involved with Internet and new media industries; provides professional development and support, networking opportunities, and community involvement. FREE membership.
  • Society for Technical Communications (STC) – the largest professional organization serving the technical communication profession; includes writers, editors, illustrators, printers, publishers, educators, students, engineers, and scientists – holds international, regional, and local conferences, seminars, chapter meetings, and job listings. Membership costs ~$130/year.
  • Web Grrls International – provides a forum for women in or interested in new media and technology to network, exchange job and business leads, form strategic alliances, mentor and teach, intern and learn the skills to help women succeed in an increasingly technical workplace and world. Membership costs $55/year.
  • Women in Consulting (WIC) – seeks to connect companies with consultants and provide a forum for consultants to share information. Membership costs $150-300/year.
